Best Gyms in Calabar 2026: Top Fitness Centers Reviewed

Calabar doesn’t get enough attention in Nigerian fitness conversations. The city is known for its carnival, its cleanliness, its seafood, but the gym scene here is also improving. I’ve put together the best gyms in Calabar, covering every notable option in the city so you know where to train before you sign up.

1. Hogis Fitness (De Voltage)  —  7 Akim Street, off Marian Road, Calabar

This gym is easily the best you’ll find in Calabar at the moment. It’s attached to Hogis Luxury Suites, so you already have an idea of the kind of investment behind the place. The gym was renovated around late December 2025 and early January 2026, with newer equipment and more space.

I particularly like that they check members’ vitals every Saturday, including blood pressure and heart rate, before training. You also get good lighting, a dark interior, professional trainers and plenty of equipment.

There are two leg presses, about four bench presses, lots of barbells, plates and dumbbells, including heavier ones. There’s also a StairMaster, which isn’t common among gyms in Calabar. Membership is ₦25,000 monthly, with student and couples discounts available.

The main downside for me is the crowd. Since it’s probably the most popular gym in Calabar, the main hall can get quite packed during busy periods.

2. Victors Fitness  —  No. 1 Park Lane, off 3rd Avenue, State Housing Estate

Victors Fitness Calabar

I recommend Victors Fitness if you don’t like squeezing yourself into a small space to train. It’s probably the most spacious gym I’ve seen in Calabar, and that makes a big difference.

The State Housing Estate location is easy enough to find, and there’s a lot going on inside and outside. You have two outdoor areas with grass turf. One has bench presses, machines and weights, while the other gives you room for other types of workouts. Inside, there are treadmills, bikes and more machines, plus another section with bench presses and a leg press.

It gets plenty of visitors, but I hardly ever feel like the place is too packed. Victors also offers aerobics, bodybuilding, boxing and personal training.

At ₦15,000 a month, I think the membership is quite affordable. My only complaints are that some machines are getting old, and I’d like to see heavier dumbbells.

3. Romaan Fitness  —  1 Ivara, State Housing Estate, Esu St, Atekong

Romaan Fitness has been around since 2023 and is an affiliate of ROMAAN VIP Lounge. In terms of equipment, I’d put it somewhere between Hogis and Victors, so you have enough to work with without the place feeling over-equipped.

One thing I like about Romaan is the community. The gym has built a good reputation in Calabar, and the people there seem to get along well. The coaches are also good, which makes the whole experience better, especially if you’re still finding your feet in the gym. They also hold Tabata sessions for members who want something more intense.

There’s a decent amount of space, with different sections for various activities. Some parts have PVC ceilings, which don’t do much for the overall look of the place, but that’s hardly a deal-breaker for me. They also make use of the outdoor space for some cardio activities.

4. M.U. Fitness  —  10 Tinapa Road, Ikot Omin Ikot Ekpo

M.U. Fitness is the newest gym in Calabar on my list, having opened in January 2026. Everything still feels fresh, and you can tell the facility hasn’t been around for long. It’s a standard gym, but there’s plenty of equipment, including heavy dumbbells. They also have standing ACs, while the motivational quotes on the walls give the place that familiar gym feel.

My biggest issue with M.U. Fitness is the location. It’s at 10 Tinapa Road, which is quite far from the Calabar Municipality area where most people in the city live. From Effio-Ette Roundabout, it takes about 16 minutes by car, and public transport can take up to 30 minutes.

The gym also doesn’t open in the afternoon. Its hours are 6 am to 11:30 am and 5 pm to 9 pm, so you’ll have to work around that. For me, the distance is the main thing holding it back.

5. Team DBB Fitness  —  Nse Efik, Plot 1A Eyo, Layout

Team DBB Fitness is another spacious gym, and I think the space works especially well for group workouts. There’s a good range of dumbbells, squat racks and bench presses, so you can still do your regular strength training without any problem.

Where Team DBB really stands out, though, is cardio and weight loss. The head coach, Coach NTB, seems particularly focused on Tabata, cardio and structured workout plans for people trying to lose weight. From what I saw, I’d probably put this among the best gyms in Calabar if weight loss is your main goal, especially for women.

I even came across one member who credited her coach after going from 98kg to 82kg in under a month. That’s a big drop, although I wouldn’t take one person’s result as a guarantee.

6. XPose Fitness  —  95 IBB Road, after Etta Agbor Roundabout, heading to Cuda

XPose Fitness has been around since 2020 and is owned by Prince Lawrence. I actually first trained here in 2021, when it was still a small gym with mostly dumbbells, bikes and weights. There were no machines or treadmills then. It has improved quite a bit since, although I still think the equipment could be better.

For me, the biggest advantage is the location. It’s around Etta Agbor Roundabout, making it much more convenient for UNICAL students than most of the gyms on this list. The gym is also right beside the large open fields in IBB, so there’s plenty of space for group workouts and cardio sessions.

Membership costs around 10 to 15K per month with an instructor. Considering the current state of the equipment, I think the pricing is fairly reasonable and matches what the gym currently offers.

The downside is the actual gym space. It’s very small, and because it sits right beside a busy main road, privacy can also be an issue. I personally used to prefer training indoors rather than being out in the open, so that’s something I’d consider before joining.

7. Lux Fitness  —  University of Calabar, Calabar

Lux Fitness is right inside UNICAL, so its biggest advantage is obvious: convenience. If you’re a student and don’t want to leave campus just to exercise, this is a decent option.

I wouldn’t compare it with the bigger gyms on this list, though. It’s a modest gym mainly meant for students who want to stay active. If I rated Hogis 100, I’d probably put Lux around 20. The gap is that wide. There are still enough weights for basic training, with plates, barbells, dumbbells and other bars. You’ll also find one or two treadmills.

What Lux lacks in equipment, it partly makes up for with the location. It’s relatively quiet and feels safe, especially in the early morning when I think it’s best to train. The gym also uses the open pavilion at Main Camp for group workouts, which can be quite fun when you’re training with friends and coursemates.

For a UNICAL student, I’d say it’s worth considering simply because of how convenient it is.

8. 1480 AZ —  Navy Barracks, Between Stadium and Rabana

1480 AZ Gym Calabar

I’m actually a bit angry with 1480 AZ because this gym has a lot going for it. The space is wide, the weights are good, there are machines and AC, and it’s easily one of the cleanest gyms I’ve seen in Calabar. There’s even a TV that could be used for cardio or Tabata classes.

I also like how open the place feels. Almost everywhere you look, there’s either a mirror or a large glass window facing outside. So even though the gym is big, you don’t get that boxed-in feeling.

The problem is publicity. This gym has been open for over two years, yet I couldn’t find a Google Business profile for it. It doesn’t show up on Google Maps or Bolt either. Meanwhile, M.U. Fitness, which only opened in 2026, already has a listing.

1480 AZ is inside the Navy Barracks between Stadium and Rabana. I don’t think the lack of publicity is planned, but it hurts the gym because a lot of people simply won’t know it exists.

Conclusion – How to Choose the Best Gym in Calabar

At the end of the day, there are quite a few Nigerian gyms to choose from in Calabar. And from what I’ve seen, you don’t necessarily have to go for the most popular one. Some of the less talked-about gyms actually have good equipment and enough space to give you a good workout.

My advice is simple: check out the gyms in Calabar yourself before paying. Look at the equipment, ask about their membership fees and find out what kind of training they offer. You can also call ahead if you don’t want to make the trip.

I’ve given you my take on the gyms I checked out, but prices and opening hours can change. So, before you make your final decision, call the gym or visit in person to confirm the current membership price and other details.

And really, don’t overthink it. The best gym is probably the one you can get to easily, afford comfortably, and actually stay consistent with.
