Most Nigerian soups use 4 to 8 tablespoons of oil per pot, which is 480 to 960 extra calories from oil alone. But, of course, we can’t do without palm oil.

The good news is that the soup itself is often okay, thanks to the vegetables, protein, and spices. The oil is where the problem starts. If you begin making the same soups you eat with half the oil, you’ll notice a big difference.

Some common spices used in pepper soup include uziza seeds, uda, and ehuru. They have mild thermogenic properties, so they slightly raise your body temperature and may support calorie burning. I’m not saying they cause a dramatic change, but every small advantage counts.

2. Efo Riro — Best Vegetable-Based Option

Spinach or efo tete is the main vegetable used in efo riro, the popular Yoruba soup. If you cook it with less oil and fish or chicken, you have an excellent meal for weight loss. The vegetables are low in calories and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

Like any other Nigerian soup, the challenge with efo riro is palm oil. With too much of it, you can have as many as 400-500 calories per serving. Meanwhile, using just 2 tablespoons of oil reduces it to around 200-250 calories.

Also known as white soup, ofe nsala is a popular Igbo soup usually made with fish or chicken. Of course, it includes utazi leaves and some yam or cocoyam as a thickener. The soup uses no palm oil at all, making it similar to pepper.
